Our Film Festival Review
The ReelOut Film Festival is a weekend long festival that features a variety of films that give those that are underrepresented in the film industry an opportunity to show their talents. ReelOut represents those in the LGBTQ+ community, as well as people of colour and aboriginal peoples. These films combat stigmas towards sex, class, gender, culture, and race. As a group, we all very much enjoyed the festival and the films featured. We found the organizers at The Screening Room to be very polite and helpful to us when we arrived. The organizers of the festival were proactive in ensuring that the festival was environmentally friendly with the use of online tickets and using beads to remove the use of paper. The beads were also used to give each film a rating of ‘below average’, ‘average/good’, ‘very good’, or ‘excellent’. It was also great that the festival offered a student discounted ticket for those that are full-time students. This also widened their attendees to the festival. Most of these films wouldn’t have otherwise be shown at any theaters in Kingston, but the festival allowed people to watch interesting and unique independent films from around the world. Also, the fact that the festival was held in a proper movie theater provides a professional aspect and allows the audience to be able to experience the films in a ‘normal’ way that most other films are shown. Overall, the festival did a great job giving people living in the Kingston area an opportunity to watch these films and used effective and efficient ways to both promote and execute the festival. We had a great time learning about the festival and watching a film and we hope to look forward to attending the festival next year. Thanks to the incredibly enjoyable experience we had, we highly recommend that people attend because it’s a memorable event that gives light to those that are underrepresented and misrepresented.
